In Kansas, there are 4 age groups for car seat and booster seat use.
Babies under 1 year old must ride in a rear facing car seat. It is safest for children to ride this way until they reach the maximum weight or height limit of the car seat. At that point, toddlers up to age 4 must ride in a front facing car seat with a 5-point harness.
Kids ages 4 to 8 must sit in a booster seat and use a seatbelt with a shoulder strap. (Using booster seats with just a lap belt can cause injuries in a crash.) If there’s no shoulder strap available, or if your child is 80 pounds or over 4′-9″ tall, then they can ride using just the seatbelt.
Kids should use a booster seat until they reach the maximum height or weight limit of the seat. Then, kids thru age 12 must wear a seatbelt while travelling in a vehicle.
